      <description><![CDATA[<div><p>The National Association of Headteachers (NAHT) recently reported heavy criticism from members regarding the English Key Stage 2 SATS tests, for failing to feature elements of fiction in any of the reading or writing papers. The article published on the <b><a href="http://www.naht.org.uk/welcome/comment/key-topics/assessment/narrow-tests-measure-background-not-ability/" target="_blank" title="NAHT Article">NAHT website on 18 May 2011</a></b>reports a claim that when there is significant emphasis on fiction in the English curriculum, the failure to include narrative writing in the tests, in which boys do not historically perform as well as girls, "smacks of political interference and a bid to increase tests scores".</p></div>]]></description>

      <description><![CDATA[<div><p style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;" class="MsoNormal"><span><span style="font-family: Calibri; font-size: small;">The statement within the Department for Education document on <a href="http://www.education.gov.uk/b0075738/reducing-bureaucracy/planning" target="_blank" title="Reducing Bureaucracy">reducing bureaucracy in schools</a> that lesson planning is one of the most frequently cited issues by teachers as creating workload, is of little surprise to anyone who has spent time in the classroom. As such, I was hugely encouraged to read in this document that neither the Department for Education nor Ofsted required written plans for every individual lesson. Instead, it is stressed that teachers’ time could be better spent in actually planning meaningful and motivating lessons, rather than laboriously filling in lesson plan templates. </span></span></p></div>]]></description>

An argument against digital exams was made by a teacher (sorry, but I can’t recall the date of the programme or name of the teacher) who stated that writing remained a key skill, which we used all the time, and therefore should be a part of the exam process.</span></span></span></p></div>]]></description>

They are being challenged to come up with winning stories by online assessment company Right2Learn and High Street bookseller Waterstone's. Hundreds of pounds in book tokens are on offer to find the country's young writing talent.</p><p>The story writing competition came about as a response to an Ofsted report which highlighted standards of written English in primary schools, recommending that teachers use resources such as the internet to improve writing skills.</p></div>]]></description>
