Right2Learn

Dear Teacher/Headteacher,

You may by now have already noticed some of the many changes to the Right2Learn website. This includes a fresh new design, in order to create greater visibility of features and benefits of the service for teachers, and to make the site easier to update regularly. Some of the new features and benefits are highlighted below.

Story Writing Competitions>>

Right2Learn is pleased to announce the launch of short story writing competitions. Sponsored by Waterstones, competitions will run each term, with £20 in book voucher prizes for each winning child in each year groups 1 to 6, and £60 book voucher prizes for the school of each winning child. Entries of up to 200 words may be submitted online via the "Competitions" page on the website for an individual child (children may enter from school or at home!) or for the whole class by simply uploading a document. Alternatively, entries will be accepted by post to Right2Learn. Shortlisted entries are displayed and voted for online by visitors to the site.
The writing competitions are in direct response to the Ofsted report "English at the crossroads" 19 June 2009, which highlighted that standards in writing remain lower than in reading in Primary schools. The report states that pupils respond well where given a good stimulus to express their ideas in speech and writing, and where activities are included using ICT to motivate pupils and develop literacy skills. We hope that this new area of activity will help stimulate children, introduce an element of fun, and contribute towards raising standards.

Please submit your children's entries by 15 November 2009

School Partner Scheme>>

The Right2Learn School Partner Scheme enables schools to involve and inform parents, complementing the efforts of teachers, without creating extra workload. Joining the scheme is simple and involves no cost to the school. Right2Learn will create a unique page on the website for your school, enabling parents subscribing from your school to be tracked. Payments will be sent to the school at the end of each term. School benefits include:
  • Revenue share of monthly subscriptions paid by parents (from £10 a month)
  • Reduction in school subscription fees.
To join, visit the School Partner Scheme page, via the menus on the left and download the application form using your school download code.

School Support Resources>>

Within the "Schools" section of the new website, teachers will find a series of new pages, which contain a variety of resources designed to facilitate further use of the Right2Learn service and share best practice. Documents from the pages listed below can be downloaded and used free of charge, using your school download code:
  • Assessment Process>>: This page explains the structure of the assessment content, and outlines the process for assessment delivery, including suggestions for assessment timing, and how assessments can be tailored to the needs of individuals or specific groups of children.
  • Assessment Plans>>: Plans to be downloaded from this page indicate which learning objectives from the schemes of work (starting with Primary Framework Maths) are assessed within each unit. This facilitates teacher planning of both lesson and assessment delivery. Other subjects will follow soon.
  • Assessing Pupil Progress>>: Right2Learn is currently in the process of cross referencing the Maths and English assessments on the system, from both the Primary Framework and Primary Strategy, to the Assessment Focuses (AFs) from the APP. The first documents produced relate to Ma2 Number, for which evidence sheets to support teacher judgments can downloaded, along with sheets to show children's working out and confidence levels. These can be used when children take the assessments individually via a pc, or when delivering assessments to a group via an interactive whiteboard.
  • Teacher Support>>: A variety of support documents can be downloaded, comprising a combination of best practice ideas from other teachers and top tips from Right2Learn. Initial documents comprise a guide to downloading copies of analysis pages, and a suggested approach for delivering assessments to Key Stage 1 children. Further documents will follow soon. Suggested subjects from teachers or top tips are welcomed, and can be sent via Contact us>>

Right2Learn Blog>>

Take part in the Right2Learn Blog and have your say regarding any relevant assessment issues. Teachers may either comment on existing topics via the Blog page, or suggest new topics via "Contact us". All contributions are welcomed! This can be used to share best practice ideas or ask for comments from other teachers.

Content Development

We have resumed the content development schedule, and much of it is well underway, with over 800 questions in draft format. The aim is to complete the remaining Primary Framework Maths Spring and Kent Science years 1 and 2 assessments by December 2009. Primary Framework Maths Summer and Literacy will then follow.
