How it works
Each child has a unique username and password for online assessment and homework purposes. Teachers set homework to be taken by each child via a simple allocation process online. This can be set for the whole class, specific groups, and individual children, according to their needs. Children log in at home with their username and password and are taken to their homework page, where the homework set is presented. Children access the homework by clicking on a named link, which delivers visually stimulating questions and answers in Maths, English, Science or ICT. These are delivered in Flash with audio, enabling children to work independently, without the need for an adult to read them out.
The questions are automatically marked, providing children with immediate feedback and explanations, boosting their confidence. The explanations within the review feature can be used by the child and/or a parent to develop the child's understanding. The review feature includes a further question, relating to the same learning objective, for extension and consolidation of learning.
The process takes just seconds for teachers to set for children to access as homework, and the outcomes are immediate.
When to deliver the homework
Obviously, this will vary from school to school, and according to the needs of each child. It will also depend on how the school are using the online assessments from Right2Learn to track Sub Level progress and facilitate lesson planning. Some typical examples of how teachers might use the online homework tool include:
-
Prior to the delivery of a Maths, English, Science or ICT unit, the teacher might set a unit of related questions to be taken as homework. This might act as a refresher for some children on areas previously covered, as well as enhancing existing learning and providing a more effective start point for the whole class, by bringing them all to a similar level of knowledge before the subject is taught.
-
After delivery of a unit, teachers might use the same or unit of content as homework, in order to confirm and consolidate learning.
-
After assessing a unit, and identifying the specific needs of each child in the subject area, teachers might set specific homework for the children individually, or in groups, matched to their needs. This differentiation might be used to consolidate learning and stretch more able children.
-
After assessing a unit, teachers might allow children to retake the unit assessment as homework, to reinforce the outcomes and boost their confidence further.
Homework may be set at any time throughout the year, including during holiday periods, to provide further revision material for children.
Benefits to schools
All outcomes for the teacher are automated. As such, the service offers a fast and effective means of delivering online homework to children in the core educational subjects WITHOUT adding to the teacher's workload with any marking requirements.
The right2learn automated data delivered to the teacher via the school master account include a series of online reports in Maths, Literacy, Science and ICT:
-
Raw Score data to indicate the number of questions answered correctly and incorrectly in each unit by each child, where the homework has been completed.
-
A Group Gap analysis, showing the overall attainment of a whole class or group of individual learning objectives, which can be used for the planning of further lessons, or additional homework.
-
An individual gap analysis for each child, indicating their achievement of each learning objective, enabling teachers to set unique targets for further work for each child.
All outcomes are SEPARATE from the outcomes from the Right2Learn online assessments delivered at schools. As such, they provide additional information for teachers, whilst not interfering with the ongoing assessment and progress measurement processes.
