The right2learn service fully supports the Assessing Pupil Progress process. Our fast and flexible service enables teachers to easily gather, consider and review evidence of pupil attainment of APP assessment criteria, and record teacher judgements online at APP assessment focus and overall levels in KS1 and KS2.

The Right2Learn Approach to APP in-School Assessment

How it works:

• enables teachers to make judgements about their pupils’ attainment, keyed into national standards

Teachers are able to set bespoke Assessing Pupil Progress assessments with right2learn with between 5 and 10 questions each against individual APP assessment focuses. These are then delivered online to children, in Flash and with audio recordings to facilitate reading. Questions are automatically marked, and the results are directly reported to teachers for each individual child and the whole class. Teachers can then review the raw scores and view questions and answers completed by the child, and subsequently record their teacher judgements online for each child's attainment. The total number of children recorded as Low, Secure or High for each APP assessment focus and overall subject level are automatically reported.   

• develops and refines teachers’ understanding of progression in their subject

Teachers can easily move between each related APP assessment focus across different levels, and set assessments and review outcomes. This allows teachers to directly compare results of relevant questions matched to different levels, in order to add confidence to the overall teacher judgements when assessing pupil progress.

• provides diagnostic information about the strengths and weaknesses of individual pupils and groups of pupils

Raw scores for individual children enable teachers to quickly identify the APP assessment focuses and overall subjects which require further development, and those where children are able to progress to a higher level. The right2learn Group reports identify trends visually for teachers against each APP assessment focus and assessing pupil progress criterion. Teachers are able to record notes and comments for individual children related to each assessment focus, to indicate reasons for their judgements and where they might hold other evidence.  

• enables teachers to track pupils’ progress over time

The date when each APP assessment is completed is recorded against each child's results. Teachers can review and update their judgements for each assessment focus at any time via the right2learn automated reports. The date when each teacher judgement was last updated is recorded against the individual assessment criterion and assessing pupil progress focus.

• informs curriculum planning

APP assessment focuses are directly related to assessment criteria from the Primary Framework and Primary Strategy in Maths and English. Right2Learn also delivers online assessments for each unit in each of these structures. As such, teachers are able to relate ongoing teaching of units within curriculum structures, which they can then assess on a unit basis or as bespoke Assessing Pupil Progress assessments.

• facilitates the setting of meaningful curricular targets that can be shared with pupils and parents

Children's results for each APP assessment are shown against an easy to review list. This includes the raw scores, record of teacher judgements and teacher comments. These can be downloaded and exported as an assessing pupil progress report, which teachers can modify and include in information to be shared with parents. The review of results allows teachers to set targets and review further progress made following further assessment.  

• promotes teaching that’s matched to pupils’ needs

The differentiation feature enables teachers to identify specific individual needs for each child against each APP assessment criterion, and then target work for the child at the same level or a lower or higher level, if appropriate. The flexibility to reassess individual criterion where results from the assessing pupil progress tool indicate the need, allows teachers to quickly and regularly revise the areas to be addressed for each child in further learning activities. The use of the learning notes within the post assessment review feature for children allows children's learning to be developed directly in context of questions set.

• supports the transfer of meaningful information at key transitional points, e.g. from Key Stage 2 to Key Stage 3

All APP assessment reports can be downloaded and exported, for the whole class and individual children. As such, teachers can easily transfer information gathered at Key Stage 2 to be sent to the school supporting each child at Key Stage 3 level. All data is archived and stored, so that the Primary School can respond to transfer information at any stage in the future, after children have progressed to their Key Stage 3 school.

• is not a 'bolt-on' to existing arrangements. APP is all you need.

Further assessment and learning resources are easily available for teachers against the Primary Framework and Primary Strategy structures, particularly where they aim to develop children's learning against any APP assessment criterion and focus where a need has been identified.
