"Is my child being taught the right subjects in Maths?"

Mrs G was concerned that her daughter Amelie seemed to be covering the same areas in Maths at school that she had already completed the year before. Mrs G was unsure as to whether this was standard practice for teaching primary Maths, and was concerned that Amelie might not be making the right level of progress.

Read what happened after Mrs G contacted right2learn to seek advice on which subjects her daughter should be covering in Maths at school, and whether she was performing well.

Mrs G felt that Amelie was capable in Maths and should be moving on to new subjects. After subscribing to the right2learn service, she contacted one of their teachers to seek advice regarding what her realistic expectations should be for Amelie in Maths.

The right2learn teacher explained to Mrs G that a key aspect of education was repetition, in order to confirm and consolidate learning. As such, it was normal to expect certain areas of knowledge and skills taught within key subjects, such as Maths, to be covered more than once.

The right2learn teacher explained how learning objectives for Maths were deliberately planned to be covered more than once within the National Curriculum. Repetition of some areas to be taught was planned over more than one term, and also in the next school year, but with different levels of difficulty.  Mrs G maintained she was still concerned as to how she would know whether Amelie was actually making the right level of progress. The right2learn teacher provided advice on:

  • the structure of the National Curriculum, and what should be covered in Amelie's school year
  • which right2learn Maths assessments to use to gauge Amelie's current level of progress
  • how to use the right2learn service to develop Amelie's specific needs and boost her learning

Mrs G began using the right2learn online Maths assessments with Amelie, and quickly found that there were a number of areas where she was less confident, even though they had already been taught. She continues to use the service to identify and address Amelie's needs in Maths.

"I have been extremely impressed with the right2learn service from the outset, in particular with the advice the teachers give. My daughter really enjoys taking the Maths tests. It is nice for me to be able to go back over them with her afterwards and use the notes to help her understand the questions. I'm now much more confident that Amelie is covering the right areas at school. What's more, I actually know myself how well she is doing and I have seen her go from strength to strength in Maths."
