"Is my child not making the right progress in English?"
Mrs L was worried that her son Kieran's level of progress in English had been reported by his teacher at the start of Primary year 4 as being of concern. In particular, the teacher indicated that Kieran's reading was only at the level expected for most children by the end of Primary year 2.
Read what happened after Mrs L contacted right2learn to ask advice on how to gain an independent means of gauging Kieran's progress and confirming his specific needs.
Mrs L was particularly concerned that the information from the school contradicted the reports she had previously received regarding Kieran's English. She subscribed to the right2learn service and then contacted one of the experienced teachers from the right2learn team to discuss her specific concerns at length.
A major factor was that Kieran had changed schools part way through Primary year 3, and that he had taken time to settle in the new school. The right2learn teacher explained that children's rate of progress often varies, rather than continuing in a straight and consistent line. This can also be affected by the child's overall well-being, which incidents such as changing schools can influence.
The right2learn teacher pointed out that an important aspect of the school reporting their concerns to Mrs L regarding Kieran's English progress was that this provided a start point from which teacher and parent could communicate and work together in measuring and responding to Kieran's needs. Mrs L was provided with suggestions as to:
- which right2learn assessments to use to provide an initial baseline of Kieran's current level of progress
- how to access analysis reports from the assessments identifying Kieran's learning needs from the national curriculum
- how to use the learning notes within each question to develop Kieran's learning, after each assessment
The information from the right2learn online English assessments was shared with the teacher in a subsequent parent meeting, and used as a fundamental basis for the forward planning for developing Kieran's learning in some of the areas identified.
"What was great for me was that right2learn gave me confidence before going to the meeting with the teacher that I would be in a position to discuss Kieran's needs sensibly. I felt that I too had an idea as to just how well Kieran was doing and what the main problems were. More importantly, I had some control over the situation, as the teacher listened to my suggestions and used the information I gave her from the right2learn assessments. I'm still using right2learn now to continue to keep up to date with Kieran's progress and also help improve his learning. The right2learn team are very helpful and certainly know their stuff! I would recommend the service to any parent."
